TNC -Telnet Communicator.

TNC allows you to communicate with all sorts of equipment fitted with V24 (RS232) ports over your network.

Where would I use TNC -

  1. Where you need to manage a remote device through its V24 port. Simply use Telnet.

  2. Where you need to see alarms originating from a V24 port on a remote device. Use Telnet.

  3. Where you need to receive streams of data from many remote V24 ports. Write your own application to open TCP sessions with the TNCs at each location.

  Stand alone unit

Simply run a Telnet client on your workstation and enter the IP number of the TNC unit you wish to connect to. TNC turns the keystrokes from your workstation into characters on its V24 port, and returns the responses from your equipment back to your screen. To make things even easier, you configure TNC using your favorite web browser. Choose V24 port baud rate, data bits, parity etc. on simple pull down choices and click 'submit'. TNC saves the settings and restores them each time it is powered up. You also manage the Telnet server in TNC using your browser - see who has a Telnet session open for example. As new features are released you can upgrade TNC software over your network with TFTP.

TNC includes these exciting features -

  • A Telnet server, so you can communicate with a V24 port anywhere that your network reaches.
  • A mini web server allows you to configure TNC with your web browser - set up baud rates, flow control etc using a simple form.
  • And of course a TFTP server to allow easy upgrade to the latest software release.

Jargon

V24, 'serial' and RS232 all refer to the RS232 standard for point to point serial communications. Examples are Com1 and 2 on a PC.

Telnet Is a standard TCP/IP application often used for configuration of network boxes such as routers. It is provided with Win95/98 and can be found in the Windows directory. Double click Telnet.exe to run it, or create a shortcut on your desktop. Also a large number of 3rd party programs can be found on the Internet; try TeraTerm, a V24 and Telnet terminal program. It is very simple to use, simply Connect by specifying the IP number of the remote TNC unit, and Disconnect at the end of your session.

TFTP Is a simple version of the familiar FTP (File Transfer Protocol). TFTP client programs are available for all major operating systems. They typically offer an explorer style interface to copy a file to a network box by specifying its IP number. Try PumpKIN.

SwitchMail.

SwitchMail – switch contact to email unit. SwitchMail monitors a switch or relay contact and sends an email whenever it changes.
