Full featured Voip service - CentrexFull featured Voip service - Centrex

If you have people working from home, operate split sites, or often have to be out of the office, this service provides all the features of a top-of-the-line office telephone system costing tens of thousands of pounds, at a very modest price. • Full range of PBX features - Voicemail, Hunt Groups, "follow me", Caller ID, music on hold, greetings message, conferencing...
  • Advanced routing options - Interactive Voice Response (press 1 for sales etc), time-of-day routing (ring different phones according to the time, voice prompts...

Analogue telephone adaptorAnalogue telephone adaptor

Use this adaptor to make any normal phone - cabled or roaming (Dect) - into a Voip phone.

Simply plug the phone into the adaptor and the adaptor into your network and you are ready to make Voip calls (well nearly, a little setting up and a Voip services provider are needed, but you get the picture).

The great thing about using adaptors like this is that your Voip services provider - see more below - allocates a telephone number to the adaptor. So when someone rings that number the attached phone rings - wherever you are in the world!

Say you normally use it in the office but are going to be away for a few days - simply take the adaptor with you and plug it into the network wherever you are - at home, staying with friends, in a hotel, at your holiday home - wherever there is broadband.

Soft phone
Soft phone
You can download a softphone for use on Pcs and laptops here

When you have downloaded it, you must configure it - this is a fairly straightforward process and is described briefly below.

1. Press the menu button on the main display. This is the button to the right of the "clear" button in the middle of the window.
2. Select "System Settings" in the configuration window that appears.
3. Select "SIP Proxy" from the next menu screen.
4. Select the item labeled "[Default]" from the list of SIP servers.
5. Enter your name, your user name and authorization user, both of which are your VoIP extension (nnnnnnn), and your password, which is specified in your confirmation email.
Finally, set the Domain/Realm and SIP Proxy to sip.mutek.co.uk and the Outbound Proxy to nat.mutek.co.uk:5082.
NB: If you are using our Centrex service, set your Domain/Realm and SIP Proxy to be lon-pbx-1.mutek.co.uk or lon-pbx-2.mutek.co.uk.
6. Return to the main menu by pressing BACK three times.
7. Select Advanced System Settings, Audio Settings, and finally Silence Settings.
8. Double click Transmit Silence, double click Yes, and then click BACK.
9. Close the menu window using the cross sign in the upper right corner.
10. You will also need to set the following "System Settings | Network"
You should have an entry for the Primary DNS Server and if you are using the Outbound Proxy enter the details nat.mutek.co.uk:5082 into the "Out bound SIP Proxy" field.

Your X-Lite installation should now be ready to use! Dial 160 to try the echo test. You should hear everything you say echoed back to you.

Dratek Vigor 2500v, ADSL router with telephone port and firewall
  • Plug an analogue telephone straight in - even a roam (DECT) phone.
  • Built in ADSL modem.
  • 4 x 10/100baseT ports.
Q- Why buy this, I already have a router?
A - In a word, Voice Quality.
(Oops, 2 words)

Remember that no matter what speed broadband you have, you only have 256k back up to the internet and this 256k has to carry everything you send - Emails, uploads of your web site, file uploads - plus your outgoing voice (Voip) traffic. Traffic levels from local users to the Internet vary; if someone else is uploading, that will affect your upload speed. Mostly that's ok - you just wait a little longer or you may not notice.

With VoIP, things are different, if outgoing voice traffic is delayed it sounds jerky and intermittent. The Vigor2500V includes automatic QoS (Quality of Service) assurance that reserves part of your Internet bandwidth for voice calls, which means that regardless of what other people are doing on your network, you will always have the necessary bandwidth reserved for Voice. (The reserved bandwidth is returned for regular use if there are no voice calls active.)

Email Checking

Another unique feature is that the unit can be set to flash an Led if emails are waiting to be picked up - even when your computer is off! If your ISP uses the POP3 protocol for their mail server, then you can set your router to periodically check for email, and the LED will light if there is email waiting for you. This means that you can see if there is email waiting without having to turn on or log into your PC.

Internet telephony basicsInternet telephony basics

Generally called Voip or Voice over IP and made famous by Skype, Internet telephony allows you to make either free or low cost calls over the internet. There are two options to start with -

1) Use a program on your computer (like Skype) with a handset or headset. You can make computer to computer calls which are generally free and make calls from your computer to normal phones which you pay for. The protocols used by Skype-like programs are proprietary.

2) Use SIP phones or adaptors. (SIP, session inititiated protocol, is an IP protocol designed to carry voice traffic.) A SIP phone looks like a normal phone but you plug it into your network rather than into a phone socket. SIP adaptors convert an ordinary analogue phone - wired or DECT - into a SIP phone.
Again you can make free calls if they are from SIP phone to SIP phone, but if you call normal phones you pay.

Which is best?
SIP phones and adaptors have some advantages -
  • They are allocated normal geographic telephone numbers (like 01234, Bedford) so people can easily call you from normal landline or mobile phones.
  • You can carry them from place to place and they still work, so wherever plug in the SIP phone/adaptor it will respond to its allocated number. You could be in the office, at home, in a hotel or enjoying your holiday home, if someone calls your SIP phone number it rings - and the caller only pays for a normal UK call (this is because they pay for the call as far as the Voip gateway, which is a computer system sited in London usually, and the rest of the call goes over the internet, free).
  • You can choose to have a simple 'single line', suitable for home or SoHo use perhaps, or 'Centrex' services, which provide all the features of a fully featured PABX, such as - transfer a call to another extension, even if the 'extension' is actually somewhere else in the world; follow me and many, many more.
