Notes on installing Powerline devices
Notes on installing Powerline devices

If you plan to share a broadband connection using Powerline adaptors it's important to find a good outlet for the "master" adapter. The most obvious outlet - where you've already plugged in the broadband modem/router and the primary PC and its peripherals - may not be the best outlet for a Powerline adaptor.

This is because data transfer rates are most affected by the equipment hard-wired to a mains circuit or plugged into the mains sockets. Plug top transformers of the type that power many small electronic devices can be quite bad. Several of these are typically plugged in with the primary PC - that's why that socket may not be the best for the master adapter.
  • It is recommend not to plug Powerline adapters into surge protectors - the better the surge protector, the worse the Powerline performance.
  • A UPS completely blocks Powerline products.
  • Domestic items like vacuum cleaners and hair dryers plugged into the same socket will often cause a reduction in data transfer rate. This is important if the socket was already showing a low data transfer rate.
  • The distance of a socket from the main consumer unit has does not have a huge affect on data transfer speed. The attached equipment and the quality of the wiring has a much larger impact.
  • Fluorescent lights are not a particular problem for Powerline equipment.
