Replacing modems with Piper.Pipers can be used in many applications originally designed to use modems. Pipers use your Ethernet network instead of telephone lines and you reap the benefit of faster, reliable connections, easier management and eliminate leased lines and call charges. Piper recognises many of the 'AT' commands used to control modems, and responds with the familiar modem messages such as 'CONNECT 9600'. For example, the 'ATD' dial command is normally used to tell a modem to dial another modem on a given telephone number. Piper uses this command to dial another Piper on a given IP number. Piper has been designed so that you can use it with your existing equipment without the need for changes to software or embedded firmware. If you have a system like this -
Perhaps you could replace it with one like this -
The computer may be running an application designed to send and receive data to the remote equipment, for example a door entry system, a telephone call logger or a building control system. The computer software and your equipment are both designed to output modem commands and expect to see appropriate responses. Piper has been designed to replace modems by understanding modem commands and responding correctly. The only change you will need to make is to change the dialed telephone numbers to IP numbers!
